About Golf a Kid to Cure

In early 2003, three teenagers from Red Deer, Jeff McNabb, Amandha Richter and Taryn Penrice, who had all experienced different forms of childhood cancer, felt determined to raise funds for childhood oncology research. The research is dedicated to finding a better way of treating cancer and to ultimately find a cure.

Initially, with the help of CKGY and Z99 radio stations, family, friends, and many corporate sponsors, they were able to launch their first golf tournament and silent auction in September 2003. This tournament was so successful that the following year, the tournament and silent auction were split into two days with the first day being dinner and silent auction and the second day dedicated to the golf tournament.

The tournament was called "The Al and Gloria/Greg and Jen Golf a Kid to Cure" due to the enormous support from these four individuals and the sponsorship supplied by the radio stations. With the help of the main corporate sponsor, the Canadian Home Builders' Association-Central Alberta, and 40 plus other corporate sponsors, this fund raising event has raised over $500,000 in its first five years.

The golf tournament has sold out quickly in each of the three years and with the generous support of all those attending the dinner and tournament, we are expecting another great year in the fight against childhood cancer.

FACT: Each day 46 kids are diagnosed with cancer in Alberta.

FACT: 1 in 330 children will develop cancer by age 20.

FACT: 35% of children diagnosed with cancer will die.

Thank you for supporting childhood oncology research.
