Green-building
Fifty members of CHBA-Central Alberta, of which 28 are builders, have committed to ensure the achievement of our objective and the goal of a greener central Alberta.

Why Built Green™...?

We depend on the services nature provides for us; clean air, water and abundant energy sources. In the developed world, many of us take this for granted.  Continued large-scale consumption of natural resources may have serious environmental and ecological consequences.  We are heading in the wrong direction if we want to leave something for future generations.  The Built Green™ Alberta program promotes integration of practical yet effective environmental conservation solutions, which we can integrate into our everyday lives.

The residential construction industry uses vast quantities of this nation's resources and has an obligation to be mindful of its impact by constructing homes using fewer resources.  By choosing a "green" future, we will choose to build homes that have a reduced impact on the environment and influence the direction of developing technologies and materials.  Many builders already embrace and practice some of these initiatives.  Built Green™ gives formal recognition and provides verifiable benchmarks the consumer can identify.

Next to the mortgage, home energy bills are the largest ongoing expense associated with home ownership.  A Built Green™ Home will provide energy savings for the life of the home, creating an economic incentive for the buyer to purchase an enrolled builder's home.  Choosing a Built Green™ future also means that there will be resources left for future generations.

Did you know?   A family of 4 using 1 low-flush toilet can save 89,060 litres of water ... the equivalent of 900 bathtubs full of water every year!

Home buyers who purchase a Built Green™ Alberta home benefit in many ways including: the assurance that their home is energy efficient; reduced energy costs on an on-going basis; improved indoor air quality and knowing that their home has a reduced impact on the environment. Homes receiving certification receive a Built Green™ Seal and an EnerGuide for Houses Label that can stay with the home and add to the resale value.
Built Green™ homes incorporate products that reduce the sources of indoor pollution. Solid, draft-free construction ensures even temperatures throughout your home and choosing innovative ventilation systems keep fresh air circulating year round. You and your family can breathe easier.

A Built Green™ home is a superior product. The Program encourages the use of more durable materials, inside and out, reducing maintenance and replacement costs. Consumers who choose to build a Built Green™ Alberta home will deal with a homebuilder who is specially trained in and committed to using the latest technology in green design and building. Built Green™ homes are independently audited to ensure each home meets the rigorous criteria laid out by the program. Choices on equipment, appliances and building materials can save money now while helping to increase the value of the home.

Consumers can choose from three "green" achievement levels; Bronze represents the minimum of these target areas, Silver the intermediate level, and Gold is the maximum achievement level of the three "green" target areas.  This makes the program more accessible and affordable to all consumers, depending on which level they have chosen.

On February 9th, 2005, Built Green™ was officially launched to the Central Alberta Region by the members of the Central Alberta Home Builders' Association (CAHBA) -- only the second jurisdiction in Canada to launch such a comprehensive program.
Built Green™ was originally launched in October 2003
to members of the Calgary Regional Homes Builders' Association.

Built Green™ is very important to our association and industry as it addresses a number of goals including building better relationships with new homeowners, reducing costs for new homeowners, and meeting our Kyoto Agreement obligation in a timely manner.

As announced at the Launch by Alberta Home Builders' Association President, John Hrynkow, we are committed to an industry-driven attainment of an EnerGuide rating of 80 for all provincial member new homes by the year 2010.  Alberta home builders are the only province and industry, thus far, to make this commitment.
